50 Blues Guitar Licks You MUST Know – Lick #9: Hot Shot – Jeff McErlain

FULL COURSE: su.pr More guitar lessons: www.truefire.com On Twitter – http On Faceboook – www.truefire.com When you hear the word “blues” and think major, you’re really thinking Mixolydian. The b7 that separates Mixo from major is what gives all forms of blues it’s raw toughness! While everyone who’s ever slung a Les Paul to the floor and cranked a Marshall has ridden the Mixolydian express, a great player to start looking for lick ideas with this sound is southern blues’s living legend, Dickie Betts. Making full use of the intervallic sugar and spice between the 3rd and b7, you Betts this lick hits hard.

Slow Power Blues Guitar Lessons – Andy Aledort – Dom. 7th Mixolydian

FULL COURSE: truefire.com Join TrueFire for free! – www.truefire.com On Twitter – www.twitter.com On Facebook – www.truefire.com One of the great things about soloing over dominant seventh chords—and something that is certainly an essential technique when improvising on a slow blues—is that players are free to exploit the difference in quality between the minor third and the major third. The scale most closely associated with dominant seventh chords is Mixolydian; in G, G Mixolydian is spelled GABCDEF, with B as the major third. The minor third is one half step lower, Bb; this pitch can also be thought of as the b9 (flatted ninth). In bar 1 of the solo, I begin on beat one by hammering on from the minor to the major third, and, on beat two, incorporate both the minor and the major third. Be aware of the difference in quality between these intervals and try to take advantage of that difference while crafting your solos.

Blues Rock Guitar Lessons – Kings: Duane Allman – Andy Aledort – Statesboro Solo 1

FULL COURSE: truefire.com More blues rock guitar lessons – www.truefire.com On Twitter – http On Facebook – www.truefire.com Duane Allman is rightfully acknowledged as one of the greatest and most influential electric slide guitarists ever, and his incredible recording of this Blind Willie McTell classic, from The Allman Brothers band: Live at Fillmore East, is a must-learn for slide enthusiasts. Duane usually played slide in an open E tuning (low to high: EBEG# BE), using a glass Coricidin bottle on the ring finger of his fretting hand. “Statesboro” is played in the key of D so most of the soloing revolves around the 10th position, moving between 10th and eighth, as well as up to 13th position. Pay close attention to the pick-hand: I use my fingers to pick (like Duane) which helps one achieve more clarity in the notes as opposed to using a pick.

50 Blues Guitar Licks You MUST Know – Lick #45: What Was That? – Jeff McErlain

FULL COURSE: su.pr More guitar lessons: www.truefire.com On Twitter – http On Faceboook – www.truefire.com One great way to give a tired lick a new lease on life is to swing the whammy bar around and use it to push notes into a pull-off. Everyone from the usual suspects (Satch, Vai, Eddie) to the not-so-usual (Bumblefoot, David Fiuczynski, Vernon Reid) have pushed and pulled their way through to some very cool sounding licks courtesy of this approach. Once mastered, you’ll quickly see how this idea will easily turn heads when executed correctly.
