When doing so, it’s even better when the run towards the ending bend is based on a numeric sequence such as the one that resides in this next lick based out of D Aeolian. Starting out with some pummeling palm-muted picking, this lick delivers the raw power and climatic anticipation to do the job right.

The b7 that separates Mixo from major is what gives all forms of blues it’s raw toughness! While everyone who’s ever slung a Les Paul to the floor and cranked a Marshall has ridden the Mixolydian express, a great player to start looking for lick ideas with this sound is southern blues’s living legend, Dickie Betts. www.creativeguitarstudio.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question… Q: Hey Andrew, What exactly is mean’t by Open String Blues. And, can you demonstrate and make a tab lesson? – Marcelo, Lisbon Portugal If you’re not familiar with the term Open String Blues it’s really a great sound popularized by both Blues & Rock artists alike. Especially, guys like Stevie Ray Vaughn & Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top. Open String Playing is all about playing a lot of your notes in the open position which would be within the first 5 frets. It incorporates a lot of keys that lend themselves well to open string use, like E, A, and D. Plus, of course, taking advantage of the effect of the ringing open strings. With a 22 fret neck there’s E’s abound ranging from the open low E string for raucous riffing all the way up to the screaming whole step bend from D to E on the first string at the neck’s highest fret. This lick ends end with that climatic string stretcher, but not before it scrambles through some single string ascending three-note patterns at blazing speed.
